Treasury Notes

Issued by the United States government prior to the creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913, Treasury Notes were a means of paying for federal government debts that paid interest to the holder of the note. They could be used to pay taxes and purchase public land, but were also unofficially used as a form of currency.
