The Refunding Certificate was an interest-bearing note issued by the U.S. Treasury in 1879. It was distributed only in a $10 denomination at a four percent interest rate. The majority of the notes were redeemed during the 1880s. Today only a few dozen certificates are known to exist, making them valuable to collectors.
