Description

The Platinum Koala, official legal tender in Australia, is one of the few series of platinum coins still being produced today. The first prominent country in the modern world to announce the production of one-ounce platinum coin issues, Australia approved the minting of platinum coins on June 18, 1987. Upon the Australian government’s approval, the Perth Mint began minting the Platinum Koala coin in September 1988.

As with its other Koala bullion coins, the design on the obverse (front) of the platinum Koala features an Ian Rank Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She is encircled by her name, the name of the country, and the denomination. In keeping with the design rotations for all its bullion coins, the reverse (back) design of the Koala changes annually, save for the larger sizes in certain years. Each year features a different representation of the cuddly, tree-climbing marsupial. The Platinum Koalas are .9995 fine and are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg sizes.
